The biggest gathering of the year at Group Camp 2009
What better way to kick start the scouting year than with the 1st Wellington group camp? Youngsters from all sections, young leaders, adult leaders and of course the parents camping, scouting and having fun together.
All together seventy five people travelled to the Avon county scout camp site Woodhouse Park for the weekend and on Sunday afternoon after camp seventy five happier people went home again. Leaders organised an imaginative and varied programme providing challenge and interest for everyone. On one side of the camp site Andy Carter led an enlightening series of science experiments whilst others clambered along the Woodhouse Park assault course. Explorer leader Nick Turner took people to and from the nearby Quarry activity centre for kayaking and water zorbing whilst instructors manned the climbing wall and ran shooting and archery sessions. The programme even included a drumming workshop which could be heard far and wide as We Will Rock You was played out on the group’s collection of percussion instruments. The fine weather meant activities during the day were a great success but no camp would be complete without a campfire. Saturday evening saw a joint gathering of the whole 1st Wellington camp and 1st Chipenham Cubs around the fire place singing both traditional campfire songs and some more modern adaptations. The huge organisational and logistical effort that went into making group camp happen has paid off as ACL Tracy Burston says why group camp is special for her: “I always enjoy seeing the whole group together. The older moulding the younger ones, everyone can learn something from each other.” Tracy went onto praise GSL Steve Altria’s decision to travel further a field for this year’s camp: “It’s nice to have a change of scenery!”
Group Camp 2009 If you missed out this time, whether you are a member or parent, next year’s venue has already been booked for the group camp and if our gathering at Woodhouse Park is anything to go by you won’t want to miss out again.
